Vital nutrients for lifting your mood and combating depression!!!
Posted by DrSri in Aug 21, 2010, under diet and nutrition
We all go through a phase where we experience depression sometime or other in our lives. Usually it is only a temporary phase, and we all manage to get out of it. But chronic depression is caused by an imbalance of brain chemicals (neurotransmitters that help nerve cells communicate, such as serotonin, dopamine and norepinephtine) along with other factors, and like any serious medical conditions, it needs to be treated. The treatment may include prescription of anti-depressants like fluoxetine, sertraline and paroxetine, which are also known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs.
But recent studies have shown that supplementing with certain nutrients which are found in our daily foods can also help combat depression. These nutrients include vitamins, minerals, omega-3 fatty acids, amino acids and inoisitol.

Health benefits of a simple stroll!!!
Posted by DrSri in Jul 25, 2010, under 1
There is no need to spend hours on a treadmill to become fit, as the key to a longer life could be as simple as taking a gentle stroll for just half an hour a day.
According to experts, a daily walk to the shops can cut the risk of early death by 20 percent.
Research confirms that it is not just exercising hard that is good for you. Even moderate, everyday activities like walking and cycling can have major health benefits.
Just walking to the shops or walking the children to school can lengthen your life – as well as bringing other benefits for well-being and the environment.
This research is considered encouraging because many people are under the impression that in order to incur health, fitness and weight loss benefits they need to exercise vigorously and this is simply not the case. The main barriers for people being more physically active are lack of time and the perception that the amount of effort required will be large. This research shows these needn’t be a concern.

Ayurvedic approach to treat Acne!!!!!
Posted by DrSri in Aug 10, 2009, under Uncategorized
Acne is one of the most common skin disorders. Adolescent acne typically begins at puberty, when there is a rise in testosterone. This time period marks the end of the kapha stage of life, childhood, and the beginning of the pitta stage of life, adulthood. The hormonal changes and emotional energies of adolescence result in a rise in pitta dosha, creating pitta-type imbalances, such as acne. Acne can also happen later in adulthood and is typically caused by hormonal shifts, ama or toxins in the body, and/or emotional stress.
The skin works as an organ of elimination, naturally seeking to remove the excess pitta and toxins from the body. Psychologically, acne can have devastating effects on one’s self-image, negatively affecting self-esteem and often leading to depression. Ayurveda offers simple remedies and a natural approach combining a healthful diet, herbs, lifestyle recommendations, pranayama, and meditation to help soothe the body and promote clear, healthy skin. Dark under eye circles and some home remedies!!!
Posted by DrSri in May 23, 2009, under 1
It is often said that eyes are windows to the soul. But the most visible and expressive part of one’s face has its own set of problems like dark circles, pigmentation and puffy eyes, which when not taken care of could be a real turn off.
Dark circles are mainly caused due to improper blood circulation. Since the skin under the eye is very delicate, the capillaries around the eye are very thin. Blood cells passing through these capillaries often tend to ‘leak’ out into the surrounding skin. Enzymes in the body break these stray red blood cells, releasing blue-black components, which are visible through the thin and transparent under-eye skin.
Bad food habits, lack of sleep, tiredness, stress, heredity, hormonal changes could all contribute to dark circles. Deficiency in iron and vitamin B could also lead to dark circles.
Try these simple home remedies for your dark under eye circles:
*Drink at least ten glasses of water everyday.
* Eight hours of sleep is a must for all of us, especially for people having dark circles under their eyes.
* Close your eyes and cover your eyelids with slices of raw potato or cucumber for 15-20 minutes.
*Grate a cucumber, squeeze to take out its juice and refrigerate. Make a mixture of lemon juice and cucumber juice and apply around the eye for 10-15 minutes.
*Make a paste of grated cucumber, add it to fresh yoghurt and make a uniform paste. Apply it on the dark circles, keep it for 15 minutes and wash it off.
*Apply a paste of turmeric powder with pineapple juice for dark circles under the eyes.
*Applying crushed mint around the eye also helps.
*You can also apply almond oil under eyes.
HOW TO DETOXIFY YOUR SYSTEM NATURALLY!!!!
Posted by DrSri in May 13, 2009, under Uncategorized
Some of the worst culprits for causing built up of toxins in our system include:
*Salty foods which cause fluid retention and puffiness.
*Those made with refined sugar which cause increased blood sugar levels.
*Alcohol and caffeine which cause dehydration and lead to sluggish Liver function.
For our own body to perform to its maximum potential, toxins need to be flushed out. Fluid intake alone will not help. To purify our system, it is essential to restore essential Vitamins and Minerals. This can be achieved by following a regimen of fruit juices combined with healthy and balanced diet. Select foods with high water content like cucumber, celery, lettuce, etc. Grapefruits are good metabolic stimulants; grapes are high in potassium (essential in maintaining normal Kidney functions), bananas and avocados digest slowly, thus helping to maintain blood sugar in healthy range.
Foods to include for detoxification:
*Fruits
*Fruit juice
*Vegetables
*Beans and lentils
*Sprouted pulses
*Oats
*Potatoes
*Brown rice
*Live natural yoghurt
*Fresh buttermilk
*Virgin olive oil and natural vinegar
*Garlic, ginger and fresh herbs
*Spices like cinnamon, cumin seeds, ground black pepper, etc
*Green tea
*Water-at least 2 liters a day.
